DAWN SHIPLEY & the Sharp Shooters/Baby If I…: A thoroughly modern gal from Texas with a rockabilly/hillbilly streak doesn’t channel the 50’s energy of Wanda Jackson so much as an amped up Patsy Cline. Loaded with sincere handmade charm, Shipley and her crew love their work and do everything they can to make it sound like play. Like the lo-fi stuff Ray Campi and that rockabilly bunch from the 70’s did, Shipley is building her own thing from the ground up and we’re all having a grand time as the building goes up. Certainly a tasty slab of fun from today’s rockabilly underground.

'Born in San Antonio Texas' en dan kan je er zeker van zijn ....good stuff ! Dawn Shipley is de naam van deze rondborstige zangeres die met haar begeleidingsband The Sharp Shooters sinds een drietal jaren de West Coast onveilig maken. Rockabilly, rockin' hillbilly, honky tonk, country, blues kan je van dit groepje verwachten. Met dit debuutalbum "Step It Up" (2003) laat Dawn Shipley de wereld weten dat zij niet alleen een uitstekende zangeres is maar ook een voortreffelijke songwriter. Liefst acht van de elf songs op dit schijfje zijn van haar mooie handjes. Ondertussen stond zij reeds op het podium met the Paladins, James Intveld, Rosie Flores, Deke Dickerson, Big Sandy en is de band met Tony Macias (upright bas), Tony De Herrera (drums) en Joel Morin (gitaar/steelgitaar) uitgegroeid tot een vaste waarde in dit muziekwereldje. Bovendien komen Rip Carson(gitaar) en Carl "Sonny" Leyland op piano ook een handje toesteken bij de opnames. En wat kunnen wij daar meer op zeggen dan "Ooh, That's Good"(track 6) en onze "Everlasting Love" ( tr. 11, Barbara Pittman's Sun Recording ) betuigen voor deze rockin' Patsy Cline met haar 'excellent blend of 50's honky tonk and rockabilly in a very authentic fashion' (Blue Suede News). Twang, growl, de honky tonk piano en 'sizzling' gitaren, afgewisseld met steel gitaar en last but not least de vocals van sweetheart Dawn die kunnen wedijveren met Marti Brom's en Wanda Jackson's keelgeluiden. Prettige kennismaking met Dawn Shipley & the Sharp Shooters en binnenkort brengen zij nieuw materiaal op de markt. Wij kijken benieuwd uit !! (SWA)
